Committee Programs
The Scituate Sustainability Committee (SSC) is a volunteer-led advisory group appointed by the Scituate Town Council. Our mission is to cultivate a thriving relationship between our town and the planet through education, collaboration, and innovation—while helping reduce costs to the town through sustainable practices. In 2024, Scituate paid $154,675 in excess landfill fees. By educating residents and improving waste diversion, the SSC helps save taxpayer dollars while protecting the environment.
See what we’ve been up to lately:
Reducing Food Waste in Schools
With help from the RI School Recycling Project, we’ve launched cafeteria composting and food share tables at all three elementary schools—thanks to the efforts of students, staff, and school administrators. These programs divert up to 10–15 tons of waste per year, reducing landfill fees by separating recyclables, liquids, compostables, and food items that can be shared and reused. Plans are in the works for extending these programs through the middle and high school cafeterias in the near future.
Greening the Scituate Art Festival
In 2024, we diverted over 2,000 pounds of waste—including compostable organics, mixed recycling, and plastic film—from the landfill. Our growing partnership with vendors and the DPW is setting a new standard for sustainability at large public events.
Earth Day Cleanup
Despite rainy weather, our 2024 Earth Day Cleanup mobilized 50+ volunteers, four fire departments, and the DPW to collect nearly 2,000 pounds of roadside waste—demonstrating our town’s commitment to environmental pride. SSC has organized this annual event for five years, coordinating with the Department of Public Works and first responders to ensure safe, effective cleanups along major roads. The event reflects a strong partnership between residents, civic leaders, and town departments to keep Scituate clean and beautiful.
Education & Outreach
We staffed educational booths at farmers markets and schools, gave presentations, and maintained an active Facebook group. Each year we publish the town’s garbage/recycling calendar and share tips to reduce waste and contamination.
