Scituate Receives Grant to Help Residents Recycle Right

Thanks to an initiative by the Scituate Sustainability Committee (SSC), the Town of Scituate has been awarded a $4,563.80 grant from the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) to support a new recycling education and outreach campaign. The SSC developed and submitted the grant application, with the Town serving as the official recipient of the funding.

Approved on August 28, 2026, the grant will help residents better understand what belongs in their recycling carts, reduce contamination from improperly discarded materials, and encourage greater participation in Scituate's recycling program.

The Recycle Right Campaign will include printed recycling guides, educational materials distributed throughout town, new signage at the Department of Public Works drop-off facility, and recycling bins and supplies to support community activities. The project also includes outreach to schools and residents, along with surveys to help evaluate the campaign's effectiveness.

Why does this matter? Recycling the right materials conserves natural resources and reduces the amount of waste sent to Rhode Island's Central Landfill. Keeping nonrecyclable materials out of recycling carts also helps the state's recycling system operate more efficiently. And reducing the amount of trash Scituate sends to the landfill can help the Town control waste-disposal costs.

The campaign will run through September 2027, with activities and educational resources introduced over the coming months.

The Scituate Sustainability Committee thanks RIRRC for supporting this initiative and looks forward to working with residents, schools, and town departments to make recycling easier, more effective, and more economical for our community.
